Burton Singer named to National Academy post

   Princeton University public-affairs Professor Burton Singer has been named a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.
   The institute was established in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences to honor professional achievement in the health sciences, and to serve as a national resource for independent analysis and recommendations on issues related to medicine, biomedical sciences and health.
   Professor Singer is the Charles and Marie Robertson Professor of Public and International Affairs and a professor of demography and public affairs at Princeton. He has been a university faculty member since 1994.
   His research interests include the demography and biology of aging; mind and body health and its underlying mechanisms; and tropical diseases.
   Prior to joining the Princeton faculty, Professor Singer was chairman of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health and professor of economics and statistics at Yale University. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1981 to 1982.
   Professor Singer is one of 64 new members elected to the Institute of Medicine this year.
