Two drivers were killed this week in a pair of traffic accidents that raise the death toll on township roads to six for the year.
Police are investigating the accidents, which occurred on Saturday and Tuesday.
Fatah Zermane, 44, of Manasquan, was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident at the intersection of Herrod Boulevard and Stults Road on Saturday.
Police said he was driving his 1989 BMW 325i north on Herrod Boulevard at 1:13 p.m. and failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Stults Road.
Police said Mr. Zermane’s car was hit on the driver-side door by a 1992 Cadillac driven by Martin Santoro, 49, of South Brunswick, who was headed east on Stults Road.
Mr. Zermane was pronounced dead at 1:47 p.m., about a half hour after the accident was reported to police, according to police.
Mr. Santoro was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick treated for a hand injury and released, police said.
The second accident occurred Tuesday morning. According to police, Rosann Blackwell, 51, of East Brunswick was headed west on Route 522 near the municipal building when her 2000 GMC Jimmy veered into the eastbound lanes and hit a 2000 Nissan Altima driven by Miriam Fischetti, 40, of South Brunswick, according to police.
Ms. Blackwell’s Jimmy crossed back across the three westbound lanes, went off the shoulder and struck a guard rail, police said.
Police and EMS personnel were on the scene within moments of the accident and found Ms. Blackwell in cardiac arrest, police said. She was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where she was pronounced dead at 9:20 a.m.
Police said witnesses told them that Ms. Blackwell veered off the westbound lanes for no apparent reason. Police said they believe she suffered from a medical condition that caused her to lose control of her vehicle.
The accident caused traffic on Route 522 west to back up for about one mile, but did not cause delays on the east side of the road.
The accidents are under investigation by Officer Lazlo Nyitrai of the South Brunswick Police Traffic Safety Bureau.
