SOLEBURY Solebury School’s girls basketball team, the Lady Spartans, return with all five starters from last season and have plans to avenge a quarter-final loss in the Penn-Jersey Championships to Mercer Christian Academy.
Last year, the Spartans finished with a 10-5 record that included winning the championship trophy from the Academy of the New Church preseason tournament.
Solebury School players include center Tocarra Lynch of Morrisville and guard Janae Weldon of Trenton, both juniors. At 6-feet 2-inches, Lynch is a defensive threat and outstanding offensive and defensive rebounder. Lynch also has great dribbling skills and the shooting range of a guard.
Bringing the ball up the court will be Weldon who will lead the offense. Weldon’s quickness makes her hard to guard and press. Weldon is the team’s leading 3-point shooter.
Double-teaming her will open the floor to the team’s most consistent shooter, sophomore Cynthia Hui of Hong Kong. Junior forward Paige Stewart of Yardley is a two-year starter, and at 6-feet gives Weldon another easy passing target.
Mia Brown of Trenton, the only senior on the team, will round out the starting five. Brown was the team’s leading stealer and hopes to increase her totals this year.
The Lady Spartans have a deep bench and can change the game by going with more guards or playing tall. Junior guard Kerry Toole of Doylestown, sophomore back-up point guard Anna Franzini of Lambertville, freshman forward and center Jenn Barbo of Carversville and eighth-grade shooting guard Olivia Hagerty of Stockton all will get substantial playing time. Any one of the four off the bench could replace any of the starting five.
