When the Manville school district completes the security projects under way, Superintendent Donald Burkhardt and Business Administrator Richard Reilly will be able to keep a closer eye on what’s going on in the schools.
In fact, they will even be able to monitor the schools from their own homes.
"It just gives us access from home and all cameras are recordable," Dr. Burkhardt said. "It’s part of the computer network."
The district is in the process of installing cameras, door phones and door alarms at the four schools after approving a $4,765 bid from Telcom Management of Wantage for the work, Nov. 15.
The project includes a total of 16 cameras 12 of which are already in operation capable of digital recording at the high school, monitoring the outside and the inside, including the hallways.
Four to six cameras are expected to be installed in Alexander Batcho Intermediate School by Christmas, Dr. Burkhardt said.
Roosevelt Elementary School was expected to have two or three cameras installed this week, while the work at Weston School is waiting for the completion of the installation of fiber optic cables.
"The cameras will also allow us to observe the playgrounds," Dr. Burkhardt said.
The doors at the high school also will be wired by Christmas, setting off an alarm in the administrative offices if the doors are opened for more than 15 seconds.
"By the end of this year, we will be pretty secure," Dr. Burkhardt said Tuesday.
