"These 5 acres extend the growing corridor of open space in the Sourlands," said FoHVOS’ President Ted Stiles
Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space (FoHVOS) recently preserved 5 additional acres of land in Hopewell Township. Located north of Hopewell Borough, FoHVOS’ newest preserve lies in the heart of the Sourland Mountain region.
The property was protected as part of a collaborative, regional effort to preserve natural resources within the 94-square mile Sourlands region. The Sourlands span Hunterdon, Mercer and Somerset counties and although it is one of the largest undeveloped areas in central New Jersey, it continues to face increasing development pressure.
The area’s vast natural resources have mobilized groups such as FoHVOS, Delaware & Raritan Greenway Land Trust, the State of New Jersey and local governments to commit resources to conserve the remaining open space. Along with the largest contiguous forest in central New Jersey, the region contains significant wetland acreage, vital habitat for threatened and endangered species, and as the headwaters for valuable water resources. Over 1 million people rely upon the Sourlands for their drinking water supply.
FoHVOS’ newest preserve is adjacent to hundreds of acres of preserved open space. "These 5 acres extend the growing corridor of open space in the Sourlands," said FoHVOS’ President Ted Stiles. "This will remain a critical project area for the Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space, and other land conservation organizations, as we work to expand the protection in this region."
