MANVILLE Lucy Emily Kowal died in Somerset Medical Center in Somerville. She was 89.
She was a long time resident of Manville.
Mrs. Kowal was sworn in as the first school crossing guard at Roosevelt School and was employed at the Manville High School Cafeteria.
She was a long time supporter of the Manville School System, active in the PTA, publicity chairperson for several fund-raising events at Roosevelt School and volunteered for the "read to children" program at Roosevelt School.
She is a sponsor of a child in Ethiopia and will continue to sponsor this child’s education for several years to come.
She was a communicant of Christ the King Church in Manville, where she often volunteered to make pierogies to support the church and was a member of the Altar Rosary Society.
Her husband, Laddie Kowal, died in 1977.
Surviving are two sisters, Stella Kanach of Ringoes and Lena Reale of Hillsborough; three sons, Richard of Bridgewater, Raymond of Dearfield Beach, Fla., and Dennis of Hillsborough; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held Dec. 7 from Ketusky Funeral Home in Manville, followed by a Mass at Christ the King Church. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Hillsborough.
Memorial donations may be made to Compassion International, an organization that provides food, clothing and education to children around the world.
