The Greyhounds’ lineup may have changed slightly but the Northern Burlington County Regional High School girls’ varsity bowling team showed it was just as good as ever with wins over Moorestown and Maple Shade this past week.
Monday’s 4-0 victory over Moorestown was hardly a contest as the Greyhounds won the total pin count by 538 pins (2134 to 1596). Kylie Croshaw led the way with a 478 series (138, 170,170), but NBC captain Shannon Wilkins was not far behind with a series of 468. Lindsey Webster rolled a 422 series (156, 152, 114) while April Savoy posted a 406 series (156, 130, 120). Samantha Todd’s 360 series was highlighted by a high game of 134.
Unfortunately, Moorestown’s boys’ team edged NBC, 3-1, on Monday. Rich Mellor was the Greyhounds’ top bowler for the day with a 524 series (182, 159, 183). Bill Moore, the team’s senior captain, rolled a 504 series (171, 153, 180). Brandon Mauer’s 434 series featured a high game of 171 while freshman Zach Gandy’s best game in a 431 series was a 167. Two freshmen, David Latwinsky (103) and Frank Capra (148 and 162), split the final three games for NBC.
On Tuesday, NBC’s girls’ team won a 3-1 decision over Maple Shade. Croshaw had a great day for NBC with a 503 series (148,168, 187). Wilkins also did extremely well with a 480 series (179, 163, 138) and Webster posted a fine series of 457 (148, 137,172). Savoy had a 372 series with a high game of 131 and Todd recorded a 368 series with a 131 high game too.
"They only lost the second game," said NBC Coach Bruce Wandling of his girls’ team.
NBC’s boys tied Maple Shade 2-2. But the Greyhounds did have some tremendous performances. Moore rolled a 611 series (182, 236, 193) and Mellor was only one pin off his pace with a 610 series (232, 211, 167). Mauer rolled a 556 series with a high game of 212 and Adam Wainwright posted a 452 series with a 174 high game. Gandy (183, 153) and Capra (148) split the last three games.
The NBC girls team is now 2-0 while the boys’ squad is now 0-1-1. NBC is scheduled to bowl against Pemberton on Friday.
GIRLS
Over the past five years or so, the Northern Burlington County Regional High School girls’ varsity bowling team has simply dominated the Liberty Division and this year should be no different.
"It could be one of our best teams. I think this year we can win the championship," said Bruce Wandling, who is in his 11th season as the Greyhounds head coach. Last year NBC finished with a perfect 10-0 record in the Liberty Division and it was 13-3 overall.
The Greyhounds are returning senior Nicole Urig, the Liberty Division’s top bowler with an average in the high 170’s. But they also have junior star Shannon Wilkins back. Senior Kylie Croshaw is at the top of her game and sophomore Lindsey Webster is continuing to build on the great head start she had as a freshman. Sophomore April Savoy is a strong bowler and junior Samantha Todd, a transfer student from Bordentown, is a seasoned varsity bowler. NBC has depth and talent. But that’s what one would expect of an NBC girls’ bowling squad. Look for NBC to compete for another Liberty title and finish in the top three at all of its local tournaments.
BOYS
In the past the Northern Burlington County Regional High School boys’ varsity bowling team has been known for having teams with superior talent. Conversely this year’s unit is a gritty bunch that’s still learning the finer aspects of the game. However, Bill Moore, a senior all-star, is already a very good bowler.
"He carried a 190 average last year," said NBC head coach Bruce Wandling of Moore, the team’s captain. Also returning from last year’s 8-6 team are Brandon Mauer and Rich Mellor, who have both improved and should take some of the pressure off of Moore. But this year NBC will have to get strong performances out of freshmen David Latwinsky, Zach Gandy and Frank Capra if it wants to be a .500 or better team. Wandling likes many of the things he’s seen in Capra’s game.
"He has a pretty nice ball and a good breaker," said Wandling, who believes Capra can be a very good bowler if he improves his consistency. This year Wandling will be assisted by Matt Pingator, a former NBC bowler.
"Matt (Pingator) has a strong knowledge of bowling," added Wandling, who is training Pingator to be a future head coach. Although NBC still has Moore, it will miss Don Burgess, who graduated last spring. Still, the team is shooting for .500 or better and it should reach that goal barring injuries.
"I’d like to keep my head above water," added Wandling, whose bowling teams rarely, if ever, have losing seasons. For the Greyhounds "Moore’ is never less.
