Chesterfield voters defeated a $19.5 bond referendum for a new elementary school building by a vote of 432-272 Tuesday night. Absentee votes were not included in the total.
The bond was the second time the question was put before residents of the township to build a second elementary school and make improvements to the existing building in preparation for a population increase expected due to the construction of as many as 1,100 additional houses in the township.
The taxpayers’ share of the referendum would have been $15.9 million, with an annual tax impact of $227.33 per $100,000 of property value. The bond question was previously defeated in 2003.
