Alexander Magoun, executive director of the David Sarnoff Library, received one of eight awards of recognition presented by the New Jersey Historical Commission. The Commission cited Mr. Magoun for his work as director of the David Sarnoff Library in establishing it as a professionally run archive documenting innovation in science and engineering. Working at the library since 1998, he has overseen projects to re-house collections in archival-appropriate containers and developed services that promote appreciation of them, giving tours and lectures, organizing events including the War of the Worlds theatrical broadcasts, and hosting researchers.
The library contains the state’s largest collection of RCA materials documenting David Sarnoff’s career and RCA’s work in television, electron microscopy, solid-state materials, computers, and video cameras. A resident of Princeton since 1999, Mr. Magoun first saw the possibilities in the library while researching his dissertation in the mid-90s.
The library is located at 201 Washington Road, West Windsor, next to Sarnoff Corp., and is open to tours for four to 25 people by appointment. A $5 donation per person is suggested. Call (609) 734-2636 for more information.
