Sy Shaffer

   Sy Meyer Shaffer, 84, died Saturday, Dec. 10, at Haven Hospice at JFK Medical Center, Edison.
   Born in New York City, he lived in Newark, Forest Hills, N.Y., Roslyn Harbor, Long Island, N.Y., Jamaica Estates, N.Y., Medford, N.Y., and then in Florida for nine years. He lived the remainder of his life in New Jersey.
   He was a professional musician. He played the trombone for "The Arthur Godfrey Show," "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "The Gary Moore Show" and wrote jingles for commercials for AT&T and for Ajax.
   He was a member of the Free & Accepted Masons. He was a music teacher at Suffolk County Community College in New York for 15 years, retiring in 1989.
   His wife, Ruth, died in 1998. He is survived by a daughter, Lynne, and her husband, Charles Schubert, of Kendall Park; a brother, Lef Shaffer of Barnegat; a granddaughter, Melissa; many nieces and nephews; and his godson, Paul Simon.
   Graveside services were Dec. 11 at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Iselin. Arrangements were under the direction of Crabiel Parkest Funeral Chapel, New Brunswick.
