Allentown/Upper Freehold Drug Alliance seeks new coordinator (Dec. 22)
By: Marisa Maldonado
UPPER FREEHOLD The Allentown/Upper Freehold Drug Alliance is looking for a new coordinator, putting an end to speculation, at least in the short term, that the organization might merge with Millstone’s alliance.
Upper Freehold officials now are in charge of hiring the coordinator, as the township recently took over leadership of the alliance from Allentown. Dana Tyler, the township’s deputy municipal clerk, said the municipalities have rotated administrative duties for several years.
Applications for the position were due Friday. The township received seven applications, but interviews have not been scheduled yet, Ms. Tyler said.
Helen Varvi, coordinator of Millstone’s drug alliance, has served as Allentown and Upper Freehold’s interim director since Joanne Schuh resigned in June to work for Ocean County supervising drug alliances on the county level.
Upper Freehold Mayor Sal Diecidue said the decision to keep the two local alliances separate was made with "an awful lot of discussion."
The two alliances will remain separate for at least another year, but the mayor hopes they will work together on events.
