Ruth (Bruskin) Feder, 92, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, in Asheville, N.C.
She was born in New Brunswick on Aug. 12, 1913, the eldest of six children to Philip and Rose Bruskin. She went on to attend Rutgers, The State University, earning a business degree in 1934. In 1937 she married Jack Feder, a dentist who specialized in prosthodontics and who was also a nationally recognized artist. Together they lived in South Orange, New Jersey.
Dr. Feder died in 1980. Ms. Feder relocated to Rossmoor a few years later.
She was a member the New Jersey Capital Area Chapter of the Red Cross, assisting with blood donor registration, helping out in the donor room, and serving refreshments. Soon she enlisted many of her friends and acquaintances, and she assumed responsibility for coordinating volunteers for all the blood drives in the area, setting up schedules and assigning staff. In addition she trained corporate volunteers at large companies, such as Merrill Lynch, that hosted blood drives.
On May 19, 1995, at the National Red Cross Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, Ms. Feder was presented with the American Red Cross Charles R. Drew Award, given each year to the one volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to strengthening or improving the Red Cross Blood Services program. At that point in time, Ms. Feder staffed approximately 12 blood drives each month, volunteering between 30 and 50 hours of her own time.
Her devotion to the Red Cross earned her not only the national award, but also citations as outstanding blood drive volunteer for the Pennsylvania-New Jersey region, presented by the Philadelphia Red Cross, and top volunteer in New Jersey, presented by the state Red Cross.
She is survived by her son, Edward Feder, of Lake Mary, Fla.; her daughter, Carol Feder MacAlister, of Asheville, N.C.; granddaughters Katharine and Jacqueline Feder, of London; grandson Charles Feder, of Malvern, Pa.; brother Harold Bruskin of Highland Park; and sister Marion Mandell, of Palo Alto, Calif.
A memorial service will be scheduled in the near future, to be held at Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple in New Brunswick. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey, 707 Alexander Road, Princeton, N.J. 08540.
