A 15-year-old boy faces criminal charges and possible expulsion after he allegedly pulled a knife on another student at South Brunswick High School while in class on Friday.
The student, who police and school officials would not name, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and making terroristic threats. He was taken to the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center in North Brunswick following the incident and remained there Wednesday, according to police.
Police said the teen and a 16-year-old boy got into an argument in a second-floor classroom at 10 a.m. Friday. The argument escalated into a physical fight, police said. Police said they do not know what the initial argument was about.
During the argument the 15-year-old allegedly pulled out a kitchen knife with a 3-inch blade and threatened the 16-year-old. A female teacher, who police and school officials would not name, broke up the fight. The 15-year-old then threw the knife behind a filing cabinet in the classroom, police said.
School officials and a school resource officer, an on-duty police officer stationed in the school, responded to the classroom. The officer found the knife behind a filing cabinet and arrested the 15-year-old, police said.
Police said no one was injured in the incident.
Schools Superintendent Gary McCartney said Wednesday that the 15-year-old student could face expulsion. He said school policy prohibits weapons from being brought into school and the school board will meet and hold "an impartial tribunal" on the incident. He said it will listen to all evidence and review the circumstances surrounding the incident and then make a decision on a penalty.
