The nonprofit Edison Wetlands Association (EWA) will be offering its annual 40-hour, public hazardous waste course — Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Recertification and Awareness Level Training — from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning Feb. 26 at the EWA office, 2003 Route 27. Participants may attend just the single course and earn eight-hour certification, or they can complete all four sessions for full 40-hour certification. The remaining three sessions will be held on March 5, 19 and 26. Attendees will be federally certified under Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines. Cost is $200 for the full course and $100 for a single session. Cost for nonprofits and EWA members is $125 for the full course and $75 for a single session. EWA is also offering free course scholarships to members of underprivileged community groups who submit brief applications. African American history event planned
The Metuchen-Edison Historical Society presents oral histories from African American residents of Metuchen at 1:30 p.m. on March 5 in the community room of the Metuchen Public Library at 480 Middlesex Ave.
Visitors can listen to keynote speakers and audio tapes for local history excerpts, share attendee’s stories, and look at the display material from the society’s archives.
Refreshments will be served and gift ideas and society publications will also be available.

Woman’s Club to meet March 8 at St. Luke’s
The Metuchen-Edison Woman’s Club, an organization of women volunteers who work together to provide service in the community and raise funds to purchase essential items for local charities, will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. March 8 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church hall, 17 Oak Ave. (corner of Oak Avenue and Route 27), Metuchen. The program will feature Middlesex County Surrogate Kevin J. Hoagland, who will provide information on wills and estates, and attorney Gary J. The Metuchen Police Department is looking for part-time police dispatchers.
Applicants should preferably have experience in emergency medical dispatch and 911 calls, but training can be provided.

World Day of Prayer celebration March 3
Church Women United of Metuchen/Edison will celebrate World Day of Prayer with “Sign of the Times” as its theme. The event, which will be presented by the women of New Hope Baptist Church, will take place at 1 p.m. on March 3 at the First Presbyterian Church, 270 Woodbridge Ave., Metuchen. Women of South Africa prepared the prayer service, with prayer and song in support of the HIV/AIDS ministry. A free-will offering will be collected. Refreshments will be served.
