Officers check child car seats

Monmouth County Sheriff Joseph W. Oxley reported that 20 child car seats were inspected and installed at the sheriff’s office Safe CARGO child seat program conducted at the Monmouth County garage, Kozloski Road and Center Street, Freehold Township, on Feb. 16.

“Motor vehicle crashes are the No. 1 cause of death for children over the age of 6 months, and it is estimated that over 600 children perish each year due to improper use of child safety seats,” Oxley said. “Safe CARGO (Children and Restraints Go together) was implemented to educate parents on the importance of proper installation of child safety seats and to save the lives of our nation’s most valuable natural resource, our children.”

According to a press release, specially trained sheriff’s officers check the make, model and manufacturer’s number of the child safety seat for possible recall, inspect car seat anchors, and stabilize seats with additional padding to prevent rocking. The Safe CARGO program has inspected more than 970 child seat installations at more than 35 volunteer checkpoints since the program’s inception in 1999.

Additional programs will be conducted on March 9 and April 6 from 3:30-6 p.m. at the county garage, Kozloski Road and Center Street, Freehold Township.
