The Northern Burlington County Regional High School girls’ varsity lacrosse team’s stars were shining in a 19-5 victory in Monday’s opener at Willingboro.
Justine Titko, who is expected to be one of the Greyhounds’ primary goal scorers this season, scored five times and assisted on another while NBC’s other awesome attacker Alyssa Pigott posted two goals and three assists. Meanwhile Alayna Morris, the Greyhounds’ magnificent middie, had four goals and an assist.
"I’m really happy with the good start," said NBC Coach Dave Adam, who had expected his star players to produce against the Chimeras. "But Willingboro is kind of down this year. They had two good girls graduate last spring."
However, all of Adam’s players played extremely well against Willingboro as the Greyhounds actually took a 14-2 lead into half time. Northern spent most of the second have just working on different plays.
Britlyn Gleeson (two goals, two assists), Jamie Ireland (two goals), Steph Lebak (two goals), Danielle Chuba (a goal) and Nicole Such (a goal) all scored for the winners while Amanda Bothwell picked up an assist. The Greyhounds outshot Willingboro, 24-9. Amanda Magee made two saves to earn her first (of what should be many) wins of the season. NBC was scheduled to have played a road game versus Cinnaminson yesterday (Wednesday).
"They (the Pirates) beat us two times last year and we beat them two times the year before," added Adam, whose team almost always plays close games versus Cinnaminson. On Monday NBC is scheduled at Delran.
BOYS
The good news for the Northern Burlington County Regional High School boys’ varsity lacrosse team is that seniors Dave Rogers and Paul Veselka are developing into potential stars. But the bad news is NBC’s first-year varsity team lost its first two contests.
The year started out with a heated and close game versus Allentown at Northern Burlington this past Saturday, which the Redbirds captured 7-5. The score was knotted at 3-3 at the half, but Allentown was able to gain control of the battle with a great second half. Kenny Hynes was NBC’s leading scorer in the game with two goals. Rogers and Vaselka each added a goal apiece.
Freshman goalie Tom Knezick was able to keep NBC in the game with seven saves.
The Greyhounds took 22 shots in Monday’s game at South Brunswick. Nonetheless, South Brunswick shot an incredible 35 times to win that contest 15-2. Rogers and Veselka each accounted for a first-half goal for the Greyhounds. But NBC had few answers for Chris Laurita, who tallied a career-high six goals, and goalie Luke Zabel, who posted 20 saves.
NBC is scheduled to host Somerville on Saturday and New Egypt on Tuesday.
