A June 7 deadline to pick Kristin Appelget’s replacement
By: Emily Craighead
WEST WINDSOR The Township Council will have until June 7 to name a successor to Councilwoman Kristin Appelget, who announced Monday that she will step down May 8.
Ms. Appelget will relinquish her seat when she becomes director of community and regional affairs at Princeton University, but she said she feels that she is leaving the township in good hands.
"I feel confident we have a stellar group of council members who care about the community and who work well together," she said Monday afternoon.
Ms. Appelget, who served for seven years on council, said she is proud of helping to launch the initiative to redevelop the area surrounding the Princeton Junction train station.
"We will be sad to see her go," Council President Charlie Morgan said.
The remaining council members will have 30 days from the day Ms. Appelget steps down to appoint someone to her seat.
"We’re scratching our heads right now about who will be acceptable to all four of us," Mr. Morgan said.
The council will seek a replacement who, like Ms. Appelget, knows the community and has an appreciation for its history and culture, he said.
"Whoever steps in will be on council for four to eight years and will have an important role to play in redevelopment efforts," Mr. Morgan said.
If the council members are divided on whom to appoint to the seat, the mayor will cast the tie-breaking vote.
A November election will determine who serves the remainder of Ms. Appelget’s term, which expires in July 2007.
Mr. Morgan said he does not expect Ms. Appelget’s resignation to delay any council business. Actions requiring four votes to pass, such as increasing the budget could, however, be held up by just one council member.
