An 80-year-old Kendall Park man died Friday from injuries sustained March 27, when he was hit by a car while crossing Sand Hill Road.
South Brunswick police spokesman Detective James Ryan said Thomas Scurato of Old Beekman Road died Friday at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, 11 days after the accident.
Police said that Mr. Scurato was crossing Sand Hills Road near its intersection with Old Beekman Road at 5:15 p.m. March 27 when he was hit by a 1991 Mercedes-Benz driven by 54-year-old Mark Chelton of South Brunswick.
Mr. Chelton had turned off Route 1 South and was headed west on Sand Hills Road, when he entered a curve in the road and hit Mr. Scurato, breaking his neck, shoulder and arm, police said.
Police said speed, drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the incident. The main focus of the investigation is to find out where Mr. Scurato was when he was hit, which is still unclear to investigators, Detective Ryan said.
Kendall Park First Aid and paramedics transported Mr. Scurato to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he remained in critical condition until he died, Detective Ryan said.
No summonses have been issued in the incident. Detective Ryan said Patrol Officer Lazlo Nyitrai of the Traffic Safety Bureau is still conducting an investigation of the incident and will work with the Middlesex County prosecutor’s office to determine whether any charges should be filed.
