Tim Donney of Station Road, Gabriela Durand’s grandfather, recently sent in this item, entitled "A Saab Story."
Gabby’s uncle, Tom Donney, of Ft. Dodge, Iowa, a passion for collecting and rebuilding old SAAB automobiles, and has the largest private collection of SAAB’s in the United States.
Last summer it was reported in this column that Big Dog Enterprises, which is owned by comedian & Tonight Show host, Jay Leno, contacted Tom, looking to add an old SAAB (with its infamous 3 cylinder, two cycle engine) to his car collection. Subsequently, Tom sold Jay a 1958, SAAB model 92, but in the process a long distance friendship developed, as did an invitation from Jay to see the collection in person.
Recently, Tom made the trip, driving a 1961 SAAB model 96, from Ft. Dodge to Burbank, Calif. Since parts could be a problem for such an old car, he made the trip with a spare engine in the trunk!
Tom spent two days with Jay Leno and got a private tour of his legendary 90 car collection, as well as a few great rides. The collection ranges from Model T’s to muscle cars, all restored to showroom condition. The collection is maintained by a staff of world-class mechanics, and is actually driven by Jay.
And in case you are wondering, Jay Leno’s TV persona is no act. According to Tom, he genuinely is a gregarious, outgoing, regular guy, with a "good" sense of humor.
