Following the first week of action in the baseball season, New Egypt is 2-1. And if it wasn’t for a tough fielding day against Florence, it might have a perfect mark.
"In our two wins we didn’t make an error," New Egypt Coach Rich Carroll said. "In our one loss, we made five."
Donny Bunce had a single, double and homer for New Egypt in the 7-6 setback to Florence.
New Egypt regrouped from this loss to pound Westampton Tech, 12-1. Tom Partyka worked all six innings in the game stopped short by the blowout rule. Justin Perrine led the offense with two singles, a triple and four RBI.
Perrine, a senior, has been the big surprise of the season for New Egypt.
"He got thrown onto third base because of an injury and we haven’t been able to get him off of it," Carroll said.
Rounding out the infield, junior Bobby Miranda plays first, junior Rick Mackesy plays second and senior Scott Stiles plays short. Dylan Rowley, a sophomore, is the catcher.
In the outfield New Egypt has three senior standouts –- Andrew Weingart in left, Bunce in center and Matt O’Connell in right. T.J. Smith, a junior, also plays the outfield. Dakota Havens (freshman) and Dan Leutwyler, a sophomore, are utility players.
Bunce is the ace of the staff, with Partyka being the second man. Partyka, Weingart, Rowley and Miranda also pitch.
New Egypt was scheduled to face Bordentown this past Tuesday. It will host Palmyra today and face Monroe at Waterfront Park in Trenton Saturday after the scheduled Trenton Thunder game.
"We’ve been in the playoffs for three years in a row," Carroll said. "We’ve won more games every year. We improve every year. The goal is to take the next step this year and make it to the next level."
