Montgomery High to host active-parenting class

MONTGOMERY — The program for parents of teenagers, "Active Parenting of Teens," will be offered again this spring at Montgomery High School.
The six-session workshop helps parents learn ways to talk with a teenager about violence, sex, alcohol and drugs, said the Rev. Michael Prewitt of Montgomery Ministries, who will run the program.
"The program also encourages open communication between parents and teens — helping to solve problems together, build a sense of responsibility, deal positively with current teen issues and reinforce the courage and inner strength that teens need to survive and thrive in the challenging world they face today," the Rev. Prewitt said. "Parents in the program also learn a positive model of disciplining effectively."
The Rev. Prewitt has a master’s of divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary and is the father of three children, 21, 18 and 15.
The Rev. Prewitt has offered both Active Parenting of Teens and Active Parenting Now — for parents of children ages five to 12 — for the past two years in Montgomery.
"The response to the workshops has been positive," he said. "The material is presented in a variety of ways, video, exercises, discussion and homework. Yes, we even have homework," he added. "The techniques presented by the Active Parenting programs are simple to practice."
The free workshop begins April 27 and runs for six Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. The program will be offered at Montgomery High School. There is a required "Parent Guide" that costs $15, however, and can be ordered through the program, the Rev. Prewitt said.
