MONTGOMERY The Township Committee has authorized the payment of $350,000 for the township’s share of the construction cost for phase two of Van Horne Park.
The park, located off Route 206 and Princeton Avenue, is a joint project of the township and Rocky Hill.
The $350,000 from the township, which will be added to the borough’s recently approved $75,000, will go toward playgrounds, the finishing touches of the softball fields, park amenities such as picnic tables, chessboard tables, benches and trash receptacles, as well as a pavilion that will include bathrooms and a storage area.
The park is slated to open in the fall, Montgomery Township Recreation Director Karen Zimmerman said.
The first phase of the park includes the construction of the softball fields, parking lots, a gazebo, driveways and the path system, said Bill Tanner, an engineer with Van Cleef Engineering Associates, the firm involved with the park’s construction.
The $2 million Van Horne Park, which is located almost entirely in Rocky Hill, occupies about 95 acres of the former Schafer tract, which borders Princeton Avenue. When complete, the park will have two entrances, one off Route 206 through the Burger King entrance and another off Princeton Avenue, west of Hickory Court.
