Hillsborough voters approved the proposed $97.1 million school budget, turned down the special question, and selected David Lin, Steve Paget and Marc Rosenberg for the board.
With a turnout of about 18 percent, the budget passed with 1,879 votes for and 1,773 against.
The second question, seeking $318,662 to add two English teachers, a grant writer, a counselor at Hillsborough High School and a fine arts supervisor, was defeated with 2,017 votes against to 1,622 yes votes.
"I am absolutely thrilled and elated that Hillsborough voters approved the base budget," Superintendent of Schools Karen Lake said. Dr. Lake added the Board of Education would take the second question to the Township Committee to see if any part of it can be reinstated.
Passage of the budget sets the local tax levy for the 2006-2007 school year at $67,045,498. The tax rate will increase from 1.837 per $100 assessed value to $1.905, adding $238 to the school tax bill for the owner of a property assessed at the township average of $350,000.
The final vote count for the three seats on the school board were Mr. Padget, 2,001; Mr. Lin, 1,876; Mr. Rosenberg, 1,523; William Kole, 1,037; Andy Levin, 1,001; Michael Detsis, 773.
"I look forward to serving the school board," Mr. Lin said after the results were posted. "We have to build a relationship with all the constituents (of the school district)."
"I’m happy people chose me to be in the district, and I hope I can show them I can do good things for the district," Mr. Paget said.
