Manville voters turned down the school budget Tuesday, defeating the proposed $15.3 million budget by a 477 to 411 margin.
The budget included a 2.68 percent increase in spending, and would add about $219 to the annual school tax for the owner of a property assessed at the borough average of $150,000.
Incumbent Board of Education member Ned Panfile was the top vote-getter, picking up 528 votes to easily outs distance the other candidates.
Mr. Panfile will be joined on the board by Herman Brunn, who received 336 votes, and Andrew Zangara, who received 311.
The other candidates’ vote totals were: Frances Brunn, 269; Mary Brunn, 254; Joe Burris, 127; Ken Lessing, 293; and Alex Tomari, 275.
