Residents set to pick up litter on Beekman Road

‘If everyone picked up one or two pieces of litter, Hillsborough would be a cleaner place.’

The drive along Beekman Road may be more enjoyable after Saturday, when a project to clean up litter along the roadway takes to the pavement.
The pickup will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, and others are invited to join in to help out.
The pickup, organized by Leslie Temple and Patricia Pugnet, will cover a section of Beekman Lane adopted by Ms. Pugnet.
"We’re out picking up garbage a couple times a year, but we’d like to go more," said Ms. Pugnet. "Last time we filled up eight big bags just from one street."
Ms. Pugnet originally got the idea to adopt a road to fulfill her daughter’s community service requirement for high school.
Now she says she does it because she wants New Jersey to go back to being the Garden State instead of the "garbage state."
Anyone interested in helping out should meet at 35 Van Bolton St. off Beekman Lane at 9 a.m. Saturday. Because it’s a dirty job don’t forget gloves, said Ms. Pugnet.
"Even if you can’t make it, people who walk dogs carry a bag to cleanup after their pet," said Ms. Pugnet. "If everyone picked up one or two pieces of litter, Hillsborough would be a cleaner place."
