Each year, the AIDS pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa claims the lives of hundreds of thousands of adults, leaving behind an untold number of orphaned children and teens. Many times, these young people must care not only for themselves, but also for younger siblings without the benefit of proper nutrition, adequate shelter, education or health care.
As part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Trenton’s global partnership with the Diocese of Kasana-Luweero in Uganda, area youth will help to raise funds for their counterparts in Uganda whose families have been devastated by AIDS. "Youth Helping Youth," a special benefit performance of the Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra, will take place Sunday, April 30, at 2:30 p.m. in St. Anthony Church, Hamilton.
One in a series of events marking the 125th anniversary of the Diocese of Trenton, the concert will be a reflection of Catholic social teaching, the main theme of the year-long observance.
The 90-minute program will be performed by the select Chamber Orchestra of the Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra, an independent music program for talented middle and high school students from scores of communities in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Fernando Raucci will conduct.
Information will also be presented at the performance about the work of CRS (Catholic Relief Services) Trenton and the global partnership with the Diocese of Kasana-Luweero. All proceeds will be dedicated to continuing this work, especially in response to the need for housing, nutrition and medical care for children and teens orphaned by the AIDS pandemic.
Benefit tickets, at a suggested donation of $15 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens, are available at the door the day of the performance, or in advance by calling the Diocese of Trenton, Office of Worship, at (609) 406-7400, ext. 5571.
St. Anthony Church is located at 626 S. Olden Ave., Hamilton.
