Princeton University senior Manzili J. Davis of Chicago was found dead in California, an apparent suicide, the university said Wednesday.
The family of Mr. Davis told university administrators they had been concerned he was missing and were informed Wednesday morning by California authorities that he apparently took his life while on a trip to East Palo Alto, Calif.
Mr. Davis, who was 21, came to Princeton from Mount Carmel High School, where he graduated with honors in May 2002. He was the president of the National Honor Society and was a member of the Scholastic Bowl Team, Math Competition Team, Forensic Society and the cross country team.
At Princeton, he was completing his degree in politics. He was a Mathey College peer adviser as well as a member of the Whig-Cliosophic Society and Prelaw Society.
He is survived by his parents, Roella Davis and Jerome Davis, and elder sisters Johari Davis and Malaika Henderson.
After learning of the family’s tragedy, President Shirley M. Tilghman called Mr. Davis’ mother to express her condolences. Princeton students, faculty and staff were later notified of Mr. Davis’ death in an e-mail.
Interment arrangements are pending an autopsy by the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office. Counseling is being offered to Princeton students, and a memorial service at the university is being planned, the university said.
