The Princeton Human Services Commission will explore the creation of a parent advocacy program at its meeting next month.
After a discussion with Princeton Regional School District Superintendent Judith Wilson, members of the commission learned that the district aims to bolster the level of parent involvement in education.
The commission indicated that the intention of the advocacy program would be to train parents how to mediate and communicate with their school-aged children. In addition, the commission indicated that the underlying goal of a parent advocacy group would ultimately be to provide the resources for parents to support learning and strengthen their child’s confidence
Members of the commission, discussing the concept at its Wednesday meeting, said they plan to gather more information about the idea by exploring parent advocacy group models that already exist. The group will discuss the concept in more detail at its next meeting.
Whatever parent program model is chosen, if any, it will take time to become effective, members said.
"It’s going to be a work in progress," Township Committeeman and commission liaison Lance Liverman said.
