MHS girls split track meets

Depth prevails vs. Dayton

   The Manville High girls competed in two team track and field meets last week and came away with a split.
   Tuesday afternoon in Manville, the MHS girls rocked Dayton by a 79-45 score. Seven different Manville athletes posted victories in individual events.
   Angelika Lazur opened the meet with a triumph in the 400 hurdles (1:21.6). Melissa Teresak ran her fastest 100 and won in a time of 14.1 seconds.
   After Dayton took first in the 1,600 and 400, Manville returned to the winner’s circle when Marzena Brozyna prevailed in the 100 hurdles (19.5). Dayton won the rest of the individual events on the track until the 4×400 relay, where Manville’s Casey Shields, Sara Kondash, Teresak and Brozyna crossed the line first in 5:11.
   Manville dominated the throwing and jumping events to compile the winning margin. Catina Santoro captured the discus (56-11) and Lorena Rivera prevailed in the javelin (60-10). Both marks were personal bests.
   Lucy Yakobchuk took first in the long jump (13-8½) and Ashley Shields won the triple jump (27-1¾).
   Manville proved to be the deeper team in this contest. The MHS girls added to their point total with several second and third places.
   Gabby Firak posted second places in the 1,00 (6:24) and 3,200 (14:35). Other second places were garnered by Ashley Shields in the 200 (30.3), Santoro in the shot put (20-9) and javelin (55-0), Rivera in the discus (52-4), Teresak in the high jump (4-0) and Brozyna in the long jump (12-9).
   Amanda Hussey finished third in the discus (50-11) and javelin (31-10). Other points for third place were scored by Nikki Jerzewski in the 400 hurdles (1:28), Ashley Shields in the 100 (14.6), Kate Harodetsky in the 1,600 (7:02), Casey Shields in the 400 (1:16.2), Lazur in the 100 hurdles (20.4), Yakobchuk in the 200 (31.1), Rivera in the shot put (18-0½) and Teresak in the long jump (12-4).
   The 4×400 relay team was the only first place finisher in Friday’s meet at Middlesex. Casey Shields, Brozyna, Lazur and Kondash hit the wire in 5:07.
   Other highlights from Middlesex included a second place finish from Yakobchuk in the long jump (12-8¼) and third places from Lazur in the 400 hurdles (1:29) and 100 hurdles (19.9), Casey Shields in the 400 (1:17.0), Monika Ozieblo in the 800 (3:04), Teresak in the high jump (4-2) and Ashley Shields in the triple jump (26-9).
   The Manville girls were slated to compete at a tri-meet with David Brearley at New Providence Tuesday before hosting Sussex Vo-Tech in the regular season finale Thursday.
