Eleanor M. Ur
Mrs. Ur, 93, of Lakewood, died March 8 at Leisure Park Health Center, Lakewood. She was affectionately known as “Aunt Ellie” to her loved ones. Born in Cumberland, Md., she had resided in Washington, D.C., for most of her life, where she had worked as a sales consultant in the crystal and fine china department of a major department store. She had lived in Red Bank before moving to Lakewood 11 years ago. Mrs. Ur was predeceased in 1989 by her husband, John. Surviving are two sisters-in-law, Rose J. DeBartol of Manalapan and Margaret Jensen of the Carteret section of Woodbridge; five nieces; three great-nephews; two great-nieces; and three great-great-nieces. A funeral service was held at Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold. Interment took place the following day at Hazelwood Cemetery, Rahway. Ronald C. Smith
Mr. Smith, 72, of the Morganville section of Marlboro, died April 7 at The Manor, Freehold Township. Born in Queens, N.Y., he had lived there and in the Bronx, N.Y., before moving to Manalapan and then to Morganville 10 years ago. Before retiring as director of Sunshine Biscuit, Woodbridge, Mr. Smith had been a director for the Squibb Corp., North Brunswick, and senior vice president of Lever Brothers, New York City. He was a member of the Mensa Society. Mr. Smith is survived by his first wife, Anne Sebastian of Jackson, and his second wife, Carol Miller of North Carolina; a son, Michael Smith of Pennington; two daughters, Teresa Axsom of East Windsor and Lisa Low of Old Bridge; and six grandchildren. Interment took place at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent section of Manalapan. The Michael Hegarty Funeral Home, Old Bridge, was in charge of arrangements.
John H. Sierra
Mr. Sierra, 72, of Howell, died April 19 at home. Born in New York City, he resided in Middletown, prior to moving to Howell seven years ago. He was a foreman at CNS/RPS, Edison, for several years. He was predeceased by a son, Edwin Sierra; and daughter-in-law, Debbie Sierra. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Luz Sierra; a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and John Lepard of Middletown; two sons and one daughter-in-law, John Sierra, and David and Sandy Sierra, all of Middletown; a daughter-in-law, Miriam Sierra of Middletown; a sister, Alice Camacho of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren. A funeral service was held at New Monmouth Baptist Church, Middletown. Burial was at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown.
Carl Carlson
Mr. Carlson, 89, of Freehold, died April 9 at home. He was born in Lakewood and resided there before moving to Freehold more than 50 years ago. A former commercial fisherman, Mr. Carlson retired in 1975 as an ammunition inspector for Naval Ammunition Depot Earle, Middletown. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a member of the military police. He was a communicant and usher at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, and a fourth-degree member of Knights of Columbus Council 1672, both in Freehold. He was a member of American Legion Post 54, Freehold, and a founding member of the Lakewood Blackhawks. Mr. Carlson was predeceased by his wife, Ethel, in 2005; a son, Richard, in 1997; and two brothers, Robert and Gilbert. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Freda Carlson of Point Pleasant; a daughter-in-law, Patricia of Freehold; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by interment at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown, Burlington County.
Alice M. Murphy
Mrs. Murphy, 73, of Howell Township, died April 11 at home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she resided there prior to moving to Howell 40 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was a parishioner at the Church of St. Veronica, Howell. She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Howell Knights of Columbus Council No. 6201, where her husband was a Grand Knight, and Howell Senior Citizens Club. She enjoyed bowling, and was an avid Mets and Jets fan. She was predeceased by her husband, Barry in 1997. She is survived by a brother, John Gaynor of Hazlet; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Veronica’s Church. Entombment was at St. Mary of the Lake Cemetery, Lakewood. Arrangements were by Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township.
Edith Sorin
Mrs. Sorin, 84, of Freehold Township, died April 15 at Concord Health Care, Lakewood. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she had lived in Long Island, N.Y., and St. Louis before moving to Freehold Township in 1966. Before her retirement in 1993, Mrs. Sorin was a bookkeeper for the N.J. Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped at its Old Bridge and Toms Rivers offices. She was a member of the Democratic Party in Freehold Township and a former member of Hadassah in Manalapan. She also was a former 4-H leader. Mrs. Sorin was predeceased by her husband, Benjamin, in 1974. She is survived by her son and his partner, David Sorin and Thomas C. Alexander of Howell. The funeral service was held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township, followed by interment at New Montifiore Cemetery, Farmingdale, N.Y.
Eleanor V. Shortmeyer
Mrs. Shortmeyer, 83, of Howell, died April 17 at The Manor, Freehold Township. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she had lived in Long Island, N.Y., and Monroe Township before moving to The Villages in Howell in 2000. Mrs. Shortmeyer was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert H. Shortmeyer Sr., in 1982. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert H. Jr. and Kathleen Shortmeyer of Freehold Township; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Arthur Goodman of Mongaup Valley, N.Y.; and three grandchildren. Emma Weisgold
Mrs. Weisgold, 90, formerly of Freehold, died April 18 at Sunrise Senior Living, East Brunswick. Born in New York City, she had resided in Freehold for many years before moving to Lakewood. Mrs. Weisgold was predeceased by her husband, Irving, in 1985. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Ronnie and Edward Mendlowitz of East Brunswick, and Lois Weisgold and Bert Schwartz of Freehold; and two grandsons. Funeral services were held at the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, followed by interment at Hebrew Benefit Society Cemetery, Freehold.
Walter L. Sherman Sr.
Mr. Sherman, 69, of Hazlet, died April 5 at Community Memorial Hospital, Toms River. Born in Newark, he resided in Toms River, and the Port Monmouth section of Middletown, prior to moving to Hazlet 14 years ago. He was a truck driver at City and Suburban Newspapers, Moonachie, and was in the newspaper business for more than 40 years, retiring in 2000. He served with the U.S. Marines during the Korean War. He was a member of the Marine Corps League, Marine Corps League Devil Dogs, and Korean War Veterans. He was also a member of American Legion Post No. 338, and Post No. 338 Police, Leonardo section of Middletown, and Marine Corps League Honor Guard. He was predeceased by his wife, Henrietta Taylor Sherman in 2005. He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Walter and Kathleen Sherman Jr. of Middletown, John V. and Diane Sherman of Edison, and Michael and Laura Sherman of Brick; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Burial was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown.
Virginia Irvine
Mrs. Irvine, 91, of Howell, died April 19 at the home of her daughter. She was born in Freehold, where she lived until moving to Howell four years ago. Mrs. Irvine worked for the Board of Taxation of Monmouth County until her retirement in 1982. Prior to that, she was employed by her brother at Old Monmouth Candies, Freehold. She was a member of the Reformed Church of Freehold and a member of Molly Pitcher Chapter 198 Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Irvine was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth, in 1994; a son, Kenneth W. in 1951; a daughter, Gail Wood, in 2000; and a brother, Warren Prest, in 1999. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Russell Campbell of Howell; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Interment took place at Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold Township, under the direction of the Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold. Memorial donations may be made to the Reformed Church of Freehold, 67 W. Joseph G. Hern
Mr. Hern, 86, of Winter Haven, Fla., died April 3 at Winter Haven (Fla.) Hospital. Born in North Bergen, he resided in Middletown, prior to moving to Winter Haven. He was a retired union laborer at Heavy & General Laborers Union, Local 472. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a communicant of St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Haines City, Fla. He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia. He is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Vreeland of Brockport, N.Y.; a son, Joseph G. Hern Jr. of Tallahassee, Fla.; six sisters, Helen Puglisi of Middletown, Marjorie Smith of Tinton Falls, Rita Puglisi of Keansburg, Mary DeMartin of Emerson, and Ann Hern and Claire Lanzona, both of Lakewood; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A funeral liturgy was at St. Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church, North Middletown. Burial was at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown. Arrangements were by John F. Lorraine Gillar Herbert
Mrs. Herbert, 80, of East Brunswick, died April 10 at home. She was a lifelong resident. Mrs. Herbert was the secretary at Van Liew Cemetery, North Brunswick, the past 49 years. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Milltown. Mrs. Herbert was predeceased by her husband, Everett, in 1989; and two brothers, Kurt Gillar and Raymond Gillar. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Garry and Gail Herbert of Jackson; a grandson; and several nieces and nephews. Interment took place at Van Liew Cemetery.
