EDITORIAL: The fact that more than one person ran for a seat on the school board should be taken as a good sign.
Jamesburg has been finding it difficult in recent years to find candidates to run for school board.
In two of the three elections prior to this year, write-in candidacies were required to fill open seats and not since 2001 has there been an actual contest (four candidates filed for three seats that year).
This year shaped up to be no different. Incumbents Anne Toth and James Eldridge were the only candidates to file for three seats.
Enter the write-ins. Both Darren Larsen and Ted Somers, who are neighbors on Pergola Avenue, saw the potential vacancy and chose to run.
Their candidacies bode well for the borough. While only one could win, the fact that more than one person ran for office should be taken as a sign that borough residents maybe ready to let go of their apathy.
Mr. Larsen was declared the winner earlier this week after the Middlesex County Board of Elections reviewed the 70-some-odd write-in tallies to determine the winner after a dispute over the spelling of names.
We want to encourage Mr. Somers to remain active and to consider running again next year.
And we’d like to congratulate Mr. Larsen, who has run and lost four times for Borough Council. We are sure he will serve Jamesburg well.
