The Bordentown High School golf team’s quest for a return trip to the state tournament ended with a 173-193 loss to Holy Cross at North Hanover on Monday.
George Benson led all Bordentown scorers with a 44. Richie Talbot shot a 46, freshman Adam Swanson shot a 51 and Tommy Pitman had a 52.
While the Scotties were not technically eliminated until Monday, last Thursday’s heartbreaking 164-165 loss to Burlington Township at the player-friendly Springfield Country Club was an even more devastating match on many levels.
"We had a couple of opportunities where we didn’t help ourselves," said Coach Rob Shappell, who knew a stroke here or a stroke there could have produced a win. The 36 that Bordentown’s Chris Mallett posted, however, was a great score.
"I was really happy for Chris (Mallett). He shot a real nice round. He shot another state qualifier," said Shappell.
Benson was also near the top of his game with a 40 and Swanson (46) and Pittman (48) also scored for Bordentown.
Bordentown picked up a forfeit win against Trenton Catholic.
Bordentown (5-6) were scheduled at Burlington City yesterday (Wednesday). It is scheduled to host Delran today (Thursday) and Northern Burlington tomorrow (Friday). On Monday Bordentown is scheduled to host New Egypt.

On Monday Moorestown slipped by NBC 159-165 in a very competitive match at Falcon Creek. Doan shot a 40, Miller a 41, Barbera a 42 and Beebe a 42.
