The Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer golf lessons. Mike Zajac will provide beginners with the necessary fundamentals to build on.
Lessons will be conducted May 20 to June 17 at the golf driving range in Ocean County Park, Lakewood. Classroom discussion will be held on rainy days in the beach complex building. Time slots will be available from 8-9 a.m. or 9:15-10:15 a.m. The fee for each player is $35. Attendees should bring a 7-iron to the first class.

‘Chalk Day’ to be held May 20 in Jackson
“Chalk Day,” a free community event presented by Jackson Community Alliance and Jackson Optimist Club, will take place from noon to 2 p.m. May 20 at ShopRite on County Line Road in Jackson. (Rain date: May 27). Prizes will be awarded in different age categories from 3 through adult. There will also be two new categories: Respect for Law and Team Pastels. Donations of yarn sought
for Tangled Thread class
The Howell Senior Citizens Center needs donations of yarn for its Tangled Thread class, a free knitting and crochet class offered at the center. Members of the class knit and crochet items for needy children, hats for chemotherapy patients who have lost their hair, items for homebound senior citizens, and items for victims of domestic violence.
Donations of four-ply, sport yarn or baby yarn are needed. Donations may be dropped off at the senior center, located on the lower level of the Howell municipal complex at 251 Preventorium Road.
The Tangled Thread class meets at the senior center Thursdays at 1 p.m. The class is free and open to Howell residents age 60 and over. Details: (732) 938-4500, ext. 2550.
Summer food service
program in Lakewood
Lakewood Mayor Meir Lichtenstein announced the township’s recreation department will be participating in the 2006 Summer Food Service Program from June 26 through Aug. 11. The Summer Food Service Program is a federal program of the Food and Nutrition Services of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and provides all children 18 years of age and younger with the same free meal in accordance with a menu approved by the state agency, regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, disability or age. Counselor in Training
program in Howell
The Howell Recreation Department will be offering a Counselor in Training program for summer camps.
The program, for teens ages 14 and 15, will be held Monday through Friday for three weeks at two different locations. The program will take place July 10-28 at Howell Middle School South and July 24 through Aug. 11 at Howell Middle School North.

Jackson Rotary Club
names new officers
The Jackson Rotary club has an-nounced the election of its new officers for 2006-07. Effective July 1, the new officers will be, Patrick McGoohan, president; Warner Rivera, vice president; Tom Gialanella, secretary; and Russ Scialpi, treasurer. Also elected to the Jackson Rotary Club’s Board of Directors are Bill Leach, Mike Broderick, Rev. Rob Morrison, Diane LaPonzina and Skip Haines.
