Lawrence High School girls lacrosse coach Heather Rainey wanted her team to win the ground balls.
By doing that, the Cardinals collected their first win of the season, a 14-13 victory over West Windsor-Plainsboro South.
"It was a really close game,’ said Rainey. "It could have gone either way."
Rainey said the deciding factor came from winning the battles for the loose balls.
"We’ve been focusing on winning ground balls," said Rainey. "When you win the ground balls you get possession and when you have possession you can go to goal. We took advantage of going to goal."
Seniors Amy Wham and Katie Coleman each scored five goals in the victory.
The victory was a pleasant change from decidedly one-sided losses for the Cardinals.
"I was so happy for them," said Rainey. "They finally got a win and when they walked off the field I’ve never seen them smile so big."
The win was a feat for the program in its third varsity season. The Cardinals went 0-11 last season.
"It was good for their confidence," said Rainey. "The girls are really improving."
After the win, the Cardinals dropped games to Princeton Day and Pennington.
Wham, Jacquie Jones and Mary Kate Rogener all scored for Lawrence in a 15-3 loss to Princeton Day on April 25.
Katie Briody led the PDS attack with four goals and an assist, while Nina Crousse had three goals and two assists and Keely Langdon had a hat trick.
Pennington defeated Lawrence, 12-3, on April 28.
"If you don’t look at the score and just watched the field, it looked pretty even," said Rainey. "They scored because they had more shots."
Wham scored twice for Lawrence, while Coleman had the other goal and Lauren Raymond had an assist.
Lyndsay Rossie had five goals and an assist for Pennington, while Colleen Williams scored three goals, Toni Catelli scored two and Kelsey Brooks and Asya Roberts each scored once.
