Charlene Elmore
Former nurse at PDS
   
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Charlene Elmore died May 5 at The Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, S.C.
   A former Princeton resident, Mrs. Elmore was the school nurse at Princeton Day School from 1979 to 1995.
   Born in Vaiden, Miss., she attended Memphis State University, obtained her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the Medical Units of the University of Tennessee and worked in the pediatric unit at the Methodist Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., and Duke University in Durham, N.C.
   After moving from Princeton to South Carolina, she worked at Lady’s Island Elementary School for one year and continued as a substitute for the Beaufort County School System until her diagnosis of multiple myeloma in 2004.
   She also volunteered her nursing skills at the Volunteers in Medicine clinic in Hilton Head Island for five years.
   She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Dr. James Elmore; daughters Kirsten, Tonya and Leslie; sons-in-law Commander Neil Meister, Scott Faulkenburg and Greg Cole; grandchildren Gretchen and Lindsay Meister, Carson, Teagan and Adleigh Faulkenburg, and Wiley Cole; and step-granddaughters Morgan, Reagan, Brittany and Whitney Cole.
   Visiting hours will be 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Country Club of Hilton Head, Hilton Head Plantation.

Michael Senich
Artist and cartoonist
   
Michael Senich died May 4 at home in Florida. He was 93.
   He grew up in Waterbury, Conn., and was a longtime Princeton resident.
   He was an artist and cartoonist.
   He worked for King Features in New York as a commercial artist for 25 years. During that time, he ghost-drew "Skippy" and "Myrtle" comic strips and later was the featured author of "The Katzenjammer Kids."
   While he was a Princeton resident, the private Misen Gallery (short for "Mi" in Mike and "sen" in Senich) on Nassau Street featured his work.
   He was a prolific sketcher both in Princeton and in his travels elsewhere. He was a contributor to the Stars and Stripes military newspaper and collaborated with McCarter Theatre under Arthur Lithgow, sketching actors as they performed.
   He developed his drawing talents early while growing up in Waterbury, where he pitched for his high school baseball team. He attended art school in New York City and was hired by the Daily Mirror as a sports cartoonist.
   He served as a political cartoonist for John Lodge in his successful bid for governor of Connecticut.
   He enlisted in the Coast Guard during World War II and was loaned to the Navy, where he created the syndicated feature "Deeds of Valor," depicting heroic acts by soldiers and featured in over 200 newspapers.
   While retired in Florida, he sketched courtroom scenes that were featured in a CBS News affiliate.
   The last of nine siblings, he is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughters Barbara Trembley of Albuquerque, N.M., and Jane Maciag of Princeton; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Amy D. Goebel

HIGHTSTOWN — Amy Downing Goebel died Sunday at Meadow Lakes. She was 93.
   Born in Wisconsin, she moved to Idaho with her family as a child and later lived in numerous locations in the United States and in Trieste, Italy. In 1958, she settled in Washington, D.C., where her husband was a law professor. She retired with her husband to Bethany Beach, Del., in 1970. She was a resident of Meadow Lakes since 1997.
   In Washington, she was administrative assistant to U.S. Sen. Frank Church of Idaho, then chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
   She was an active volunteer with the Red Cross and civic organizations wherever she lived. She enjoyed music — participating and appreciating — including songs, dance and classics.
   She is remembered for a warm wit, unique sense of humor, a special way with words, and unconventional joie de vivre.
   Wife of the late Col. H.P. Goebel Jr., she was also predeceased by a grandson, three brothers and two sisters.
   She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Happy and Jack Wallace of Princeton; two brothers and three sisters-in-law; grandchildren and their spouses Margie and Peter Gibson of Princeton and Chris and Nadia Wallace of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five great-grandchildren; and 18 nieces and nephews.
   The funeral will be at the Fort Myer Chapel, Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., with burial at Arlington National Cemetery.

Rozanne M.P. Grigger

LOWER GWYNEDD, Pa. — Rozanne Marie Peters Grigger died Saturday. She was 87.
   She grew up in Tiffin, Ohio, and was a former resident of Oreland and Melrose Park, Pa.
   After graduating from Tiffin Columbian High School, she earned a chemistry degree from Bryn Mawr College in 1940 and worked in medical research at Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania.
   During her long residence in Oreland, she volunteered with many organizations, including the Oreland Women’s Club, Meals on Wheels, Girl Scouts, Oreland Girls Softball League and Bryn Mawr College Alumnae Association.
   She was an active member of St. Philip-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, where she was a choir member for 50 years.
   She was an avid bridge player and golf enthusiast.
   Daughter of the late Lucy and Norman Peters, wife of the late John C. Grigger and sister of the late Mary Frances Rinker, she is survived by her daughter, Jane Grigger of Plainsboro; son and daughter-in-law John and Janna Grigger of Melrose Park, Pa.; and grandchildren Joanna and Jordan Grigger.
   The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Philip-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, 317 Oreland Mill Road, Oreland, Pa.
   Interment will be in Edge Hill Cemetery, West Nanticoke, Pa.
   Visiting hour begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Nicholas J. Rossi

LAWRENCE — Nicholas J. Rossi died Saturday at home. He was 82.
   Born in Princeton, he had been a resident of Lawrence for the past 54 years.
   He retired after 43 years at Educational Testing Service.
   A 1943 graduate of Princeton High School, he was a member and secretary of I.A.S.C. of Princeton for 50 years.
   A World War II Army veteran, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
   He was a member of The Church of St. Ann of Lawrence and an avid bowler and member of the Princeton Nassau Bowling League.
   Son of the late Pasquale and Cesina Rossi and brother of the late Anthony, Flori and Plavio Rossi, Elvera V. Singer and Jane Ranallo, he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Charlotte Bloom Rossi of Lawrence; sons and daughters-in-law Gary and Judith Rossi of Pennington and Nicholas Jr. and Karen Rossi of Hamilton; daughter and son-in-law Kathleen and Joe Karatka of Hamilton; grandchildren Ryan, Kylee and Lyndsay Rossi, Joey, Jeffrey, Jeremy, John, Jay and Amy Karatka, and Nicole and Christine Rossi; and several nieces and nephews.
   The funeral will be held 8:45 a.m. Wednesday at Mather-Hodge Funeral Home, 40 Vandeventer Ave., Princeton.
   Mass of a Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday at The Church of St. Ann, 1253 Lawrence Road, Lawrence.
   Entombment will be in St. Mary’s Mausoleum, Hamilton Township.
   Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
