Programs to begin week of June 21
The Arts Council of Princeton will offer classes this summer for novice to experienced artists.
Located in the air-conditioned conTEMPORARY Arts Center in the Princeton Shopping Center, the Arts Council’s catalog of summer art classes attempts to offer something for everyone.
A full description of courses and programs can be found on the Arts Council’s Web site, www.artscouncilofprinceton.org. Registration can be filled out online, by mail or can be received over the phone at (609) 924-8777. The summer semester begins the week of June 21 and ends the week of Aug. 15.
For adult classes, the Arts Council offers instruction in watercolor, ceramics and dance. In "Watercolor: Plein Aire," students will learn how to capture sunlight and shadow in outdoor settings. Students interested in ceramics can explore the sculptural, decorative and functional possibilities in clay. For those interested in dance, "Beginning Adult Flamenco" promises to give body, mind and soul a total workout.
The Arts Council will continue to have its non-instructional "Opening Drawing Workshop" this summer in the conTEMPORARY Arts Center, giving artists the opportunity to work at their own pace with a live model.
During the summer break, the Arts Council offers a variety of all new classes for teens to explore. New classes in printmaking, ceramics, drawing, writing and even DJing will be offered. In "Printmaking Without the Press," students will be introduced to printmaking without the limitations of a traditional press bed. Students will use various techniques including monotypes, linoleum blocks and photo transfers.
Teen artists who are motivated to develop a professional drawing portfolio can take advantage of "Portfolio Prep: Drawing Workshop." During this workshop, students will meet each day to receive in-depth instruction on how to enhance their overall drawing skills.
Teens interested in learning how to work with clay can take "Ceramics." Through weekly demonstrations, students will learn hand-building techniques, basic wheel throwing and basic glaze application.
Another new addition to the Arts Council’s class catalog is "MixMaster 101," where students will study the musical art form of the DJ. Covering mixing, blending, scratching and beat juggling, this class runs the gamut of essential turntable and CD fundamentals. All equipment will be on site.
For those who enjoy writing, "Growing a Story: A Writing Workshop for Teens" will instruct students in techniques on how to create a story from scratch.
For children, in addition to the Arts Council’s summer camp program, the conTEMPORARY Arts center offers a "Spanish Dance" class for ages 6 to 12. Students will receive instruction in Flamenco, Folk and Classical Spanish dance.
Classes are scheduled during both daytime hours and evenings. Scholarships for qualified students are available. The conTEMPORARY Arts Center is located in the Princeton Shopping Center next to Eckerd pharmacy. There is plenty of free parking.
