MONTGOMERY Do you qualify for the "Senior Freeze" on your property taxes? Not sure? A free Senior Freeze consultation by certified financial professionals will be held at the Senior Center at the Otto Kaufman Community Center 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
The Senior Freeze known formally as New Jersey’s Property Tax Reimbursement program pays rebates to qualified seniors on the difference between their current property-tax bill and the taxes they paid during their first year of eligibility.
"In Montgomery, some seniors may be entitled to substantial rebates," Recreation Director Karen Zimmerman said in a prepared statement. "We are pleased to be able to help qualified seniors get their applications in on time."
To be eligible for the program, persons must be 65 or older, have lived in Montgomery for 10 or more years and have owned their home for three or more years, township officials said. In addition, 2005 income must be $41,972 or less if single, or $51,466 if married. Applications this year are due June 1. For more information, see www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation.
At the Senior Freeze consultation on Saturday, local volunteer financial professionals will meet with residents privately to review their eligibility, and if qualified, they will assist them with the application.
No registration is required for the consultation.
To take full advantage of this free consultation, residents are advised to bring copies of their 2005 tax returns and older returns, if available. Application forms will be provided, township officials said.
The Otto Kaufman Community Center is located at 356 Skillman Road, approximately across from the side entrance to the Montgomery High School. Transportation assistance can be provided. Call (609) 466 3023.
