Attack on the Toms River Blockhouse

The historic “Attack on the Toms River Blockhouse” will be re-enacted May 20 at 10:30 am and 2:30 p.m.. by Patriots and Loyalists who will start camping out in Huddy Park, Toms River, May 19 at 3 p.m. The public is invited to talk to the militia and to visit the sutlers (vendors of historic goods). Cameras are welcome.

Concurrently, the Toms River Library will be hosting a series of events about the era. It was one of the 42 libraries nationwide, and the only one in New Jersey, selected to feature a traveling exhibit on “Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who Made Modern America.” The colonial leader’s role will be highlighted Saturday at 2 p.m. by the American Historical Theater with a living history. Earlier at noon journalist Marc Dilonno will take his audience on a virtual tour of 350 Revolutionary War sites in the state.

Worn American flags can be left at the park on Saturday. The cadets of Cedar Bridge Academy will conduct an official ceremony for their respectful disposition Saturday at 4 p.m..

Three decades ago, in honor of the nation’s bicentennial celebration, a movie was made featuring the Attack on the Toms River Blockhouse, which was written and directed by County Historian Pauline S. “Polly” Miller and produced and narrated by Robert L. Those who like a little spice with their history, can also attend the annual New Jersey Official State Chili and Salsa Cook-off which will be taking place one block north from Huddy Park on Washington Street.
