Township residents may weigh in on a proposal to extend a portion of the Lawrence-Hopewell Trail from its terminus at Village Park to Keefe Road on Tuesday.
The 6:45 p.m. public hearing on the proposed 900-foot-long trail extension will be held in the Township Council meeting room at the Municipal Building. The trail is intended for bicyclists and pedestrians.
The public hearing is necessary to comply with state Green Acres Program regulations, Municipal Manager Richard Krawczun said. The proposed trail would be built on township-owned land that was purchased with Green Acres Program money.
"The idea of a trail connecting Village Park with Mercer County Park Northwest has been in existence for some time," Mr. Krawczun said. "This public hearing is just a step that we need to take to be compliant with Green Acres Program regulations. We can also answer any concerns that residents may have (at the public hearing)."
The Lawrence-Hopewell Trail is a 20-mile-long loop that would connect Lawrence and Hopewell townships. The trail was proposed in 2002, and since that time, several sections have been completed three in Lawrence and one in Hopewell.
All of the completed segments of the trail are marked by the LHT’s green triangular sign.
One segment of the trail has been completed on the Educational Testing Service campus on Rosedale Road, and another segment has been completed through The Lawrenceville School campus.
A third portion of the trail begins on the corner of Main Street and Gordon Avenue in the village of Lawrenceville, and continues through the village to the township-owned Village Park.
A fourth section has been completed in Hopewell Township. It runs along the frontage of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. campus on the Pennington-Rocky Hill Road.
