The Michael W. Thorne Scholarship Four-Mile Run/Walk will take place this Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. at Franklin Lake Park. The event, a fundraiser for a scholarship named for fallen borough firefighter Michael W. Thorne, is sponsored by the West Long Branch Fire Department and its Ladies Auxiliary. Race day registration opens at 7 a.m. and closes promptly at 8:45 a.m. Kids’ races will begin at 9:45 a.m. The run/walk route is a mostly flat course through the borough’s residential neighborhoods. The Italian American Memorial Association in Long Branch recently honored longtime member Richard G. Traversa for his many contributions to the community organization.

Traversa’s role in IAMA was recognized during a dinner held in his honor on April 19, which was attended by family, friends and city officials including the mayor.

The ballroom at the clubhouse was dedicated in his honor, and a plaque will be installed on the wall.

The former owner of Freedom Cycles, Traversa was instrumental in the renovation of the IAMA building on West End Avenue. He has served IAMA as president and a trustee, initiated the Friday night bingo games that are the organization’s major fundraiser and has chaired IAMA’s Memorial Day Service, which will be held this year on May 28, beginning at 10:15 p.m.

The Rev. James B. Coyle Council No. 12620 of the Knights of Columbus presented the “Gift of Life” monument to the parishioners of St. Dorothea’s Church, Eatontown, in honor of the parish’s 100th anniversary. The focal point of the monument is a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

At the Long Branch Board of Education public meeting on April 25, school board incumbents Mary L. George and Lucille M. Perez and newcomer Bill Dangler were sworn in by School Business Administrator and Board Secretary Peter E. Genovese III. The three candidates ran unopposed in the April 18 school board election. Also at the meeting, Michelle Critelli was appointed as board president, and Violeta Peters was appointed board vice president.

The Monmouth Beach Public Library, 18 Willow Ave., will sponsor free children’s programs for preschoolers, ages 3 to 5 and for school-age children in grades K-4 on May 25.

“Rabbit and Bunny Tales” is the preschoolers’ program and will run from 1:30-2 p.m.

A film, “Rabbits” will be shown to the school-age children between 3:45-4:30 p.m. That program also includes stories, crafts and activities.
