Knights softball falls to Steinert

The run through the Mercer County Tournament finally came to end for the West Windsor-Plainsboro North softball team on Tuesday night.
After posting a pair of wins including an upset of top-seeded Allentown in the quarterfinals the Knights were eliminated with a 5-0 loss to Steinert in Tuesday’s MCT semifinals.
"We didn’t play quite as well as we had the other two games," said North coach Jason Petrone, whose team bounced back to beat Lawrence, 11-1, on Wednesday and improve to 9-12 on the season. "We were beaten in the field, at the plate and on the mound. Steinert was better than us at all facets of the game.
"We played OK. We had five hits. But we just weren’t as sharp as we had been. It was still an accomplishment to get this far. To make it to the final four teams and to beat a team like Allentown, it’s a great accomplishment for our team."
Steinert broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the third, then added two more in the fourth to advance to Thursday’s championship game against Hopewell Valley.
"We had an opportunity to get some runs in the first inning and in the third inning, but we didn’t get the big hit that we needed," Petrone said. "But I’m happy with the girls and the way they played in the tournament. We came in after having just lost our chance to make the state tournament. Instead of getting down, we played two of our best games of the season. I’m proud of then for that.
"We still have a few games left and we’re hoping to win a few and see if we can get to .500 by the end of the season."
