EBPD will sponsor Youth Police Academy

The East Brunswick Police Department (EBPD) is accepting applications for its first Youth Police Academy to be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., June 26-30, at Churchill Junior High School, Norton Road. Organizers hope to make the program an annual event.

The academy is open to East Brunswick seventh-graders. Applications were distributed through the school system during the first week of May. Additional applications are available at police headquarters.

The weeklong academy will cover many aspects of police work including patrol and crime-scene investigation. Demonstrations by the department’s SWAT and SCUBA teams are planned. There will be field trips to police headquarters, the police training facility and other locations within East Brunswick.

The academy can accommodate 40 students; spots will be filled on a first-come basis. Applications, which must be received by June 2, may be brought to the Police Administrative Division, Jean Walling Civic Center, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. A $60 fee, payable by check or money order, will cover the cost of academy uniforms and graduation.

The youngster/cadet will be required to wear the department-issued uniform of the day. A formal graduation ceremony is set for June 30. Time and location of the ceremony will be determined prior to the start of the program.
