Haunted Beginning
By: Bob Brown
In a mere 14 hours, on Sept. 17, 1862, more souls died on a 30-acre cornfield of rural Maryland than in all the battles of the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Mexican War and the Spanish American War combined. D-Day in World War II saw only a quarter of the casualties suffered in this one encounter between Union and Confederate troops: the Battle of Antietam.
Writer/Director Rob Child conceived the script for this documentary about the single bloodiest day in America’s history, and what it meant for the remaining course of the war as well as of the nation. The story is dramatically narrated by Ronald F. Maxwell, the director of Civil War epics Gettysburg and Gods and Generals. Child draws on historical records of eyewitness, first person accounts, and intersperses commentary by noted historians, including Princeton Professor Emeritus and Pulitzer Prize-winner James M. McPherson (Crossroads of Freedom: AntietamLincoln’s Emancipation ProclamationUnrated. Lincoln and Lee at Antietam: The Cost of Freedom, distributed by Inecom Entertainment, will be aired on NJN July 13, 9 p.m. It is also available on DVD, with commentary tracks by Maxwell and Child.
