ROOSEVELT – The borough has found a new borough administrator.
During its June 12 meeting, the Borough Council unanimously voted to appoint William E. Schmeling, of Manasquan, as the new borough administrator.
The position had been vacant since Robert Clark resigned in March.
Councilman Michael Hamilton said the borough’s personnel committee interviewed seven candidates for the part-time job, and that Schmeling came out as the top selection for the 15-hour-a-week position.
Schmeling also works in Helmetta in Middlesex County as a part-time borough administrator. He will continue in that position while working in Roosevelt, according to Hamilton.
Councilwoman Pat Moser said that Schmeling has good references, which the committee checked.
“He comes highly recommended,” Hamilton said.
Schmeling started working in Roosevelt on June 19.
During its last meeting, the council also unanimously voted to add two alternate member positions to its Planning Board. The board will now have a total of 13 members.
The council appointed Alison Petrella to serve in one of the new positions, but the other alternate seat has not yet been filled.
The new ordinance increased the number of alternates on the board from two to four. There was no comment from the audience during the public hearing on the issue.
Councilman Daniel Hoffman asked why the council had to add members to the Planning Board.
Hamilton, who serves on the Planning Board, said the board anticipates difficulty in getting a quorum during the summer months. He also said the board has had problems in various current hearings with some members having to continuously abstain or recuse themselves from certain discussions.
