When school opens in September, 17 longtime teachers and staff members won’t be around to greet students because they have retired after many years of service to the Lawrence public school system.
Lawrence High School is losing six veteran teachers and staffers, and the Slackwood Elementary School and the Lawrence Intermediate School are losing five apiece. The Lawrenceville Elementary School is losing one member.
At LHS, Principal Donald Proffit is retiring after 15 years in the district the last six years as principal.
Also at LHS, Robert Platt retired after 34-and-a-half years and Mary Edwards retired after 29 years. Math teacher Greta Pineles and language arts teacher Diane Wilfrid are both retiring after 21 years in the district. School nurse Kathleen McIlvaine is calling it quits after 17 years.
At the Slackwood Elementary School, cafeteria staff worker Geraldine Wisniewski is retiring after 36 years and reading teacher Cecilia Szeg is retiring after 35 years. Polly Stroman is ending her career in the district after 26 years. School secretary Janice Wallauer is leaving after 22 years, and head custodian Claude Emerson is retiring after 16½ years.
Lawrence Intermediate School is losing Diane Carter after 32½ years, and secretary Janet King after 30 years in the school district. Writing lab teacher Janice Lehman is retiring after 20 years. Eileen Brennan-Randall is leaving after 16 years and Jennifer Gerlach is retiring after 15 years.
And at the Lawrenceville Elementary School on Craven Lane, reading teacher Joanne Evans is retiring after 17 years in the school district.
