International music events on tap in Monroe

The Monroe Township Cultural Arts Commission’s 2006 Music in the Park Summer Series will offer free international music concerts from 6-8 p.m. on six evenings in the gazebo on the lake at Thompson Park, Monroe.

The concerts, which will feature sounds ranging from Dixieland to the music of the Andes, Lithuanian folk music and dance to Brazilian jazz and salsa, will provide a showcase of “get-up-and-dance” music.

The schedule is as follows:

+ June 29 – Summit Stompers, a seven-piece Dixieland band, playing sounds of Mardi Gras;

+ July 6 – “Music of the Andes,” featuring the international musical group Inca Son dressed in authentic and colorful Inca attire and sharing the sights, sounds and culture of ancient Peru and other regions of Latin America;

+ July 13 – The Lithuanian Folk Ensemble, featuring four folk singers, four accompanists and four dancers;

+ July 20 – Brazilian Jazz Quartet, featuring accordionist Eddie Monteiro;

+ July 27 – David Cedeno and His Salsa American Orchestra, performing classical and modern love songs;

+ Aug. 23 – Bucky Pizzarelli, featuring the jazz legend whose career has spanned more than 60 years, from the Vaughn Monroe Orchestra to concerts at the White House and staff-musician positions with NBC and ABC.

Concertgoers should bring their own chairs or blankets.
