With the beginning of summer, the Princeton Regional Health Department has issued these tips on how to prevent heat illnesses:
Drink plenty of water or non-alcoholic beverages throughout the day.
Reduce physical activity or reschedule it for cooler times of day.
Wear loose and light-colored clothing.
When in the sun, apply sunscreen to all exposed skin and wear a hat.
If no home air conditioning is available, take advantage of libraries, senior centers, movies or malls during the hottest times of the day.
Check on elderly relatives or neighbors to see if they need help taking proper heat precautions.
Do not overdress children.
Talk to a pharmacist or health-care provider about any current medications. Some can increase the risk of heat-related illness.
Don’t ever leave anyone infant, adult or pet in an enclosed, hot car.
