SilverSneakers program available to older adults

The YMCA of Western Monmouth County, Freehold Township, will join with Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Oxford Health Plans in recognizing the unique needs of older adults.

Through participation with the SilverSneakers Fitness Program, Horizon and Oxford are able to offer older adults a way to increase their levels of physical activity and motivate them to remain active. The Silver Sneakers program is available at no additional cost beyond the monthly premium to eligible members of Horizon Medicare Blue, Medicare Blue Plus, and Medicare Value Plus, as well as Oxford’s Medicare Advantage Plan, Signature, Essential, Plus, and Balance plans.

Designed and managed by Axia, which announced the program, SilverSneakers is an exercise program specifically designed for Medicare beneficiaries’ health and physical needs. Eligible members receive a basic membership at the YMCA of Western Monmouth County, where they can participate in specialized non-impact SilverSneakers fitness classes focusing on improving strength, flexibility, balance and coordination. Certified SilverSneakers fitness instructors teach the classes, and in addition to the classes, participants can also use the YMCA’s exercise equipment, weight training, circuit training, and other fitness offerings such as aerobics, sauna, hot tub and social events.
