The Charles E. Gregory School of Nursing, Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge, announced the following local students who received diplomas at the spring commencement exercises:

Shalimar Ortega, Monmouth Junction; and

Elizabeth Stefanowicz, Kendall Park, and recipient of The Award for Excellence in Surgical Nursing.

Meghan Kathleen McCarthy, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick, has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at The College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va.

Diane Lagowski, North Brunswick, was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, Pa. A junior accounting major, she is the daughter of Carol and Joe Lagowski.

Rowan University, Glassboro, announced the following local students named to the dean’s list for the spring semester:

Rosemary Braude and Nicole M. Monfasani, both of the Dayton section of South Brunswick;

Christie E. Abromaitis, Stefanie R. Gilbert and Diana M. Gray, all North Brunswick;

Kathleen M. Donohue, Evan D. Mahoney, Justin J. Makowski and Jonathan M. Sock, all Kendall Park section of South Brunswick; and

Ashley C. Bishop, Christopher G. DeSevo, Nina E. Gazzillo, Tara M. Kelsey and Stefanie R. Whitefield, all of Monmouth Junction.

Thomas Armento, 15, Kendall Park, a special education student at the High Road School, Somerset, recently won the “2006 Breaking Barriers: In Sports, In Life” essay contest sponsored by Major League Baseball. The grand-prize winner for grades seven through 12, Armento was honored during a ceremony at Shea Stadium. His essay “Living With Courage” told how he grew up with a mother who loved him but couldn’t care for him properly because of her cerebral palsy. After being placed in several foster homes, he describes how he finally found a real family last year.

The concert choir at Linwood Middle School, North Brunswick, earned a rating of “excellent” at the High Note Festival at Six Flags Great Adventure, Jackson, held in early June. The school’s jazz band earned the ranking of “superior,” while the wind ensemble also earned “superior.” Both are directed by Chris English. The chamber orchestra led by Rich Golazeski earned its third consecutive ranking of “superior.”
