Paintings by Honymar at JCC

An exhibit of works by Richard F. Honymar is at the Jewish Community Center in Deal, where it will run through Aug. 10.

A reception will be held July 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the JCC’s new Gallery on Grant, located adjacent to the Performing Arts Center, 100 Grant Ave., Deal Park

In an artist’s statement, Honymar, of Long Branch, deflects discussion of the content of his paintings. Instead, he prefers talking about the medium he applies, the glazes he experiments with, the brushes he hand-crafts.

“If I wanted to talk about paintings,” he states tersely, “I’d be a writer.”

Of the current exhibit, Honymar explains that the subject matter of the paintings is of secondary importance to “the life that emanates from the canvas.”

“This series of paintings from the mountains and from the ocean captures a moment of light reflected from the sea or lighting up a portion of a mountain. Those reflections intensify colors unlike any other moment in time.”

Honymar studied in the U.S. and Italy, was the recipient of a fellowship at the Academia de Belle Arti, Perugia, Italy, and Artist for Environment Foundation, Delaware Water Gap, and was artist in residence at the New York Studio School.

His work has been exhibited widely in solo and group shows in New York and New Jersey, including at the Trenton State Museum, The Whitney Museum, Jersey City Museum, Monmouth Museum and The Guggenheim.

Hours at the JCC Gallery are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Sunday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. Call (732) 531-9100, ext. 130.
